The LED Device
An LED, or light emitting diode, is a semiconductor device. That means that, unlike incandescents, they do not have a filament that will burn out, unlike fluorescents they contain no toxic materials such as mercury vapor and they don't radiate infrared, electro magnetic or ultraviolet energy. They are remarkably efficient because they emit light solely by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material when a voltage is applied. They compare to incandescents and fluorescents roughly the same as transistors compare to vacuum tubes, and, just like transistors, they are fully capable of many, many years of reliable, maintenance-free operation.
